Now that the chicks are two weeks old, you can expect that they will begin to get bigger and bigger and you would need a chicken coop for them to live in. The problem is chicken coops are now expensive so it would be a good idea if you will build it yourself. You can do it on weekends, and aside from being able to do it on your spare time, you can save yourself lots of money.
But before you begin building your own chicken coop, you have to consider some factors so that you would not feel frustrated when something goes wrong.
1. The best rule in making a chicken coop is simple: always consider how many chickens you are going to raise. Every chicken needs at least 4 sq. ft of space to be able for it to move freely. The number of chickens you have will be multiplied by 4 sq. ft and this will give you the total size needed for your floor area.
2. Next is planning where you would place your chicken coop. You can place the coop in your yard facing south so that the shade of the trees can cover it during very hot times of the day. Also, keep it away from bushes or lush trees because predators of domestic animals mostly like to hide in them. Every predator loves chickens so keep that in mind.
3. Since you now know the size of your chicken coop, you can already make your own design according to your preference. For doors and windows, you can design them according to the time you want to keep them open. Chicken wires are of course necessary especially if you want a chicken run for them to exercise on.
Lumber will be needed as well as the shingles, hinges, silicone and cinder blocks. So if you want to start right away on building your own coop, make a list of all the materials first before running to the hardware store. You will surely get annoyed when you suddenly realize you forgot something essential while in the middle of your project.
Now that you have everything, go on with you project and build it! Usually, the best days in making a chicken coop are the weekends especially if the weather is good. Starting it early, you can have your coop finished in a day. When you already have your coop built, do not put your chickens in it yet for at least 72 hours because the silicone you used for curing will still give off its fumes for many hours and chemical fumes are not good for poultry animals.
So after you are done, congratulate yourself because you have successfully built yourself a chicken coop. From now on you can just sit back while you enjoy your fresh eggs every morning. You deserve them.
